KZN Arts Institute
History of our institute
The organization was first founded in 1996, when Esther Mbatha the founder had graduated from a Fashion Design Academy.
The founding of the Organization was motivated and inspired by the lack of Job and study opportunities for the local community and the challenge to reach and afford higher distant learning. We are partnered with excellent and well experienced instructors and facilitators who are also fashion designers. The Institution currently offers a less costly and less complicated fashion and textile course. We target learners who have an interest in starting their own fashion label or clothing manufacturing business or joining a professional fashion career. The training provided is over a shorter period of time and is less costly than traditional fashion school courses.

A significant number of our graduates are easily absorbed in the job market while the entrepreneurial and venturesome become self-employed and invariably become creators of employment for others. A major factor keeping countries from being able to fight poverty is the inaccessibility of higher education and training. If no one can afford to educate themselves further, they can’t get better paying jobs and so remain trapped in poverty. With university education in South Africa in something of a crisis and out of reach for many, there needs to be an alternative way to bring education to the population. This is why our government views Technical and Vocational Educational and Training (TVET) Colleges as a priority. By allocating funds to TVET colleges and other skills development programmes they hope to bring further education to the people.
By making training and skills development available to people, be it in the form of learnerships, short courses, workplace training, we can help people to upskill themselves and stand a better chance of escaping poverty. This would give South Africa a more skilled workforce, in the position to innovate and bring new ideas to the country to combat challenges we face and strengthen the economy.
The founding of our organization was thus motivated and inspired by the lack of Job and study opportunities for the local community and the challenge to reach and afford higher distant learning.
